Freebies help incumbent parties in Maharashtra, Jharkhand polls, but what's next?

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti swept Maharashtra, while the INDIA bloc retained power in Jharkhand — both proving most pollsters wrong about the magnitude of the victories. Both states will see higher fiscal pressure from increased spending on financial assistance for women, with sharp cuts in capital expenditure to keep deficits under control, according to research and investment firm Emkay Global. It is estimated that the rise in financial assistance under the Ladki Bahin Yojana in Maharashtra, from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,100, would incur a 40 per cent higher cost at Rs 64,400 crore. Up to 65 per cent of the funds for agriculture, drinking water, and sanitation have also been unutilised, according to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India’s report on State Finances in Jharkhand released in August 2024.
