Why Opposition needn't read 'privatisation' in Railways (Amendment) Bill
This week’s Lok Sabha debate over the Railways Bill, 2024, has once again thrown up concerns about whether the Indian Railways was headed for privatisation. It seeks to repeal the Indian Railway Board Act, 1905, and include its rules in the Railways Act, 1989. Kumar was seconded by the likes of Samajwadi Party MP Neeraj Maurya, who charged, “The government wants to sell the country’s assets.” Several other members from the Opposition bloc voiced their apprehensions about a purported move to privatise the national asset that railways is. In July 2023, he had emphatically declared in the Lok Sabha, “There is no proposal to privatise Indian Railways.” As recent as in October this year, at an event in Nashik, Vaishnaw stated: “There is no question of privatising the railways.” Talk of privatising the railways has evolved over time.
