No mangalsutra and bindi, why would your husband be interested, judge asks woman
India Today“If you don’t behave like a married woman, why would your husband show any interest in you?” This is what a sessions judge holding a mediation session for a separated couple told the wife, according to a Pune-based lawyer in a social media post. In one instance, a sessions judge allegedly told a woman in a domestic violence case that she was not wearing a “mangalsutra” or “bindi” and made the above statement. In another case, Jahagirdar recalled a mediation session where a judge told his female client, who was demanding maintenance, that women always seek men who earn more than them, while men earning well are willing to marry even a maid who washes utensils. Jahagirdar criticised the systemic tolerance for such remarks in district courts, stating that while these are just a few examples, many more incidents occur that “would shock the conscience of any rational-thinking, educated person.” He lamented that there was no effective mechanism to challenge or report such comments made by judges during proceedings.
