Janelle Mascall and Jaamal Braithwaite met in junior high school in Bushwick, Brooklyn. But while Ms. Mascall could easily take the PATH train to her Manhattan job as a recruiter for a tech company, Mr. Braithwaite, a lawyer, would have a harder time driving to various New York courthouses, some on Long Island. “Once our parents started weighing in, we started thinking maybe this isn’t the best situation,” she said. “I personally have never lived in a big residential building, minus living in the dorms in college, but those weren’t luxury buildings,” Mr. Braithwaite said. “A washer-dryer in unit was our dream,” he said, although a building laundry room would do.
