Ricky Rubio was upset when he was traded to the Cavaliers, but now is enjoying his renaissance
New York TimesCLEVELAND — Ricky Rubio was quite upset when he heard he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was preparing to play Luka Doncic and Slovenia, on the other side of the world, and as he put it Sunday, “in the summer, my mind was somewhere else in my NBA career.” Rubio, 31, is married with a 2-year-old child, and the Cavs would be his fourth team in five seasons. Whatever he calls, we’re gonna run and just gonna take it from there.” Bickerstaff said he waited until the day after Spain was out of the Olympics to call Rubio. “In the past, I would get traded and get frustrated, like, ‘Oh I have to start over again in my role,’” Rubio said. But when you set your ego aside and you just make the best of the role that you have and take advantage of that, there’s no better thing to do on a team than everybody accepting what they have to do.” The Cavs are asking both Rubio and Kevin Love, a five-time All-Star who is owed $60 million over this season and next, to come off the bench.
