Fishermen release dugong trapped in net into sea in Tamil Nadu

India Today

A massive dugong, which was trapped in a fisherman's net in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur, was safely released back into the sea on Sunday. Twenty fishermen from Adhiramapattinam had gone into the sea on Sunday morning, when they saw a massive creature trapped in the net of a fisherman, Chellathurai, when they were near Thanjavur’s Keechathottam. The fishermen then informed the Pattukottai forest department, and with the help of the forest department officials, they released the dugong back into the sea. Dugongs are protected by the Tamil Nadu government and fishermen have been instructed to release any dugong that gets trapped in their nets back into the sea.
