Supreme Court refuses to order ban on liquor sales, says states can consider home delivery
India TodaySupreme Court has refused to pass an order to ban liquor sales in the middle of the coronavirus lockdown that has triggered large crowds across states, sparking fears of virus spread. The Supreme Court was hearing a PIL on Friday that sought to ban liquor sales saying overcrowding at liquor shops risk large-scale transmission of coronavirus. The Supreme Court has said state governments should consider online sale or home delivery of liquor to address the problem of overcrowding. The number of liquor shops is very less and number of people who want it is very large.” The bench said, “We will not pass any order but states should consider indirect sell/home delivery of liquor to maintain social distancing.” As the lockdown was eased on May 4 with the third phase, liquor shops across the country were opened up except for the containment zones.
