Man faces court charged with manslaughter over the death of Cobram woman Emma Bates

A man has fronted court on a fresh charge of negligent manslaughter over the death of 49-year-old Emma Bates in northern Victoria. John Torney, 40, appeared via video link in Shepparton Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, after being charged by detectives from the Cobram Crime Investigation Unit last Friday. Cobram woman Emma Bates was found dead at her home in Victoria's north in April 2024. Mr Torney was already facing several assault-related charges following Ms Bates's death, including intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, common law assault, aggravated assault of a female and unlawful assault.
