A majority of parliament wants to shorten the period over which partner alimony is due. Former PVV MP, Louis Bontes wants to reduce the maximum term from twelve to five years, but most of the other fractions think his proposed legislation won't work out for stay-at-home older spouses. To increase the chance of Parliament accepting a legislation proposal that also considers the position of older spouses, the VVD, PvdA, and D66 are working on a proposal of their own to shorten the partner alimony term. If the marriage did not last longer than five years, and there are no children involved, the maximum duration of alimony equals the number of years the marriage lasted.
