I Have a Money Saving Tactic for Eating at Restaurants With Friends. Apparently It’s Making Them All Angry.

Pay Dirt is Slate’s money advice column. If I somehow get a free appetizer, my friends and family think since it’s free, everybody should be able to get to enjoy that it’s free, while I pay full price for the meal. I’m fine if I don’t get to use 100% of the value of the appetizer to offset whatever entree I buy, but I think at least part of it should. I told her that I was upset that my friends couldn’t let me have one deal when they weren’t even willing to get other deals themselves. —Too Frugal Friend Dear Too Frugal Friend, I think you’re missing the point of spending time with your friends: It’s not to get the best deal for yourself.
