Jupiter: First data from Juno mission reveals massive cyclones and auroras

ABC

The first close-up glimpse of Jupiter's poles reveals massive cyclonic storms — some as large as 1,400 kilometres in diameter — and powerful auroras. "You wouldn't recognise it as Jupiter at all," said Dr Jack Connerney of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre, deputy principal investigator on the Juno mission, and lead author on one of the studies. Storms and powerful magnetic fields In the first study, Juno mission principal investigator Dr Scott Bolton of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio and colleagues investigated the giant planet's atmosphere and gravitational field. Unlike Earth, massive cyclones circulate around Jupiter's north and south poles Dr Brad Tucker from the Australian National University said the first data from the Juno mission help would formulate our knowledge of the planet for the next decade. The Juno mission The Juno space probe was launched on August 5, 2011 Its mission is to peer below Jupiter's dense cover of cloud to answer questions about the gas giant and the origins of our solar system It will observe Jupiter's gravity and magnetic fields, atmospheric dynamics and composition, and evolution The spacecraft, which is powered by solar panels, went into orbit around Jupiter on July 4, 2016 Its highly elliptical orbit passes over the planet's poles, dives within 5,000 kilometres of its cloud tops, and then goes out again to a distance of up to 8.1 million kilometres On August 27 2016 it captured the first ever images of Jupiter's north pole.
