HC asks govt. to act on panel recommendations to curb Periyar pollution

The Hindu

A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the State government to look into the recommendations of the high-level committee constituted by the High Court to curb the pollution of the Periyar. “Unless actions taken by various departments are coordinated and supervised by a single authority with the power to take immediate action without having to revert to the government and other agencies, nothing worthwhile would happen to contain pollution. The court asked the government to look into the recommendations of the high-level committee and implement them, as it felt it could not wait for action on the part of the government to constitute a unified authority. The recommendations of the high-level committee included improvement of effluent and sewage treatment plants of industries near the banks of the river, setting up infrastructure for sewage treatment and management in all urban local bodies in the catchment areas, maintenance of proper flow of water on the Eloor stretch of the river, undertaking periodic desludging, de-weeding and desilting, formulating an action plan for the restoration of the river and ramping up surveillance of the river stretch passing through the Eloor-Edayar areas, and strict action against industries for non-compliance with anti-pollution norms.
