Winter cold puts Ooty’s homeless at risk

The severe winter temperatures in the Nilgiris pose a serious threat to the safety of homeless people in the district. According to senior officials from the Nilgiris district administration, there is only one shelter to house homeless people in the district, at Mullikorai in Udhagamandalam. Activists stated that this current mechanism relied heavily on the awareness among local residents to inform authorities about the presence of homeless people within their communities, and called on Nilgiris residents to be aware of the avenues available to them to assist people who don’t have shelter. He appealed to local residents who noticed any homeless people to contact Anbu Arivu Foundation through the following phone numbers : 9487244702, 9488824454, 9786809823 and 0423-2959777. Officials from the Nilgiris district administration also stated that the police, or any official from the Social Welfare Department, Differently-abled Welfare Office, the Revenue Department or the Municipality can be contacted for assistance.
