This is not the first or last time I will type these words: People on the internet are mad at Selena Gomez again. On Monday, Gomez posted an emotional video in an Instagram Story in which she tearfully responded to the intense increase in ICE crackdowns and mass deportations of Mexican immigrants due to Trump’s new executive orders. One viral tweet responding to Gomez’s video on the mass deportations sums up this point of contention: “You can’t be in a movie that promotes such a harmful depiction of Mexico and then come here crying for ‘your people.’ ” On a related note, a frequent critique of Gomez is that she embraces her Mexican culture and Latin identity only when it benefits her. But this rage was also taken offline and straight to broadcast, with Tom Homan—the new Trump-appointed official known as the “border czar”—chastising Gomez as a talking head on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show. Gomez ended up deleting the video and putting up another post on her Instagram Story that consisted solely of white text on a black background: “Apparently, it’s not OK to show empathy for people.” Yikes.
