Kawakami: 49ers owner Jed York on 2022 expectations, lessons learned from the Jim Harbaugh era and much more

New York Times

Jed York is direct and sounds pretty honest when he underlines the characteristics that are most important to him these days, almost 14 years after taking over full management of the 49ers, almost nine years after starting a chain reaction that included firing three coaches in three years and almost six years after finding stability and true elements of success when he hired Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch. “The thing that I love about Kyle, and I think you see it when you cover him, he’s very, very direct,” York said on my podcast Thursday. I’d rather hear bad news directly and honestly from Kyle and from John — John is the same way — than, ‘Well, maybe things are better than what they are, we have this, we have that.’ “I’d rather go through the process honestly and figure out how to fix it as opposed to hear things that aren’t true and not being able to trust the people in your own building to be open and honest about where your team is.” I’ll add that for the first half-decade of York’s tenure as 49ers owner, he really didn’t seek out unvarnished evaluations. “I think there’s always more things you can do to be better,” York said. “I don’t think that that’s in the cards,” York said of a partial roof at Levi’s.
