Shattered: A Catholic community confronts its founder’s lies and sexual abuse

LA Times

Dr. Loredana Moretti, right, jokes with Riccardo Mure inside the Chicco community of L’Arche, an international charity that helps people with intellectual disabilities, in Ciampino, near Rome, on March 22. The findings of expert reports commissioned by L’Arche reveal that its founder, Jean Vanier, perverted Catholic doctrine to justify his sexual compulsions and abuse women. “I believed in something, in a vision that then is revealed to you and you’re told it’s not like that,” said Azucena Bustamante, who oversees five L’Arche communities in Honduras, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Hans Zollner, praised L’Arche for its “fearless” courage in exposing the painful truth about its past and said the phenomenon of spiritual gurus misusing their authority can’t be ignored any longer by the church.
