The HinduThe Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, affiliated to the Communist Party of India, has called upon the district administration to restore the irrigation channels that were filled with earth to facilitate road infrastructure development work at Nadiyam Village Panchayat in Peravurani taluk. In a memorandum addressed to Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam, association’s Thanjavur District Committee Secretary N.V. Kannan pointed out that the irrigation channels originating from Venkatankulam and Aandikulam, both linked in the grand anicut canal network, were filled with earth while the Highways Department took up road expansion work in Nadiyam Panchayat domain in 2023. When this was opposed by farmers, the department official assured that the irrigation channels would be restored once the road expansion work is completed. In another memorandum, he drew the attention of the District Collector to the poor and improper condition of sluices/shutters of the irrigation channels branching off from the Uyyakondan Extension Channel at Cholagampatti and Royamundanpatti Neppi Eri Main Channel.
