Inside Wisconsin assistant Greg Scruggs’ unique approach to D-line coaching
New York TimesMADISON, Wis. — Greg Scruggs couldn’t contain his excitement. Minutes after Jamel Howard publicly announced his commitment to Wisconsin during a signing day ceremony at his high school Feb. 1, Scruggs posted a three-word message on Twitter: “I’m not playin’.” Scruggs had helped Wisconsin to secure a massive recruiting win for the program, pulling Howard away from Michigan, Illinois, LSU and Miami even after Howard previously decommitted from the Badgers. Considering Scruggs had been hired by Luke Fickell as Wisconsin’s defensive line coach just three weeks earlier, it made the accomplishment even more noteworthy. But once I get to the spring, ask me again and I’ll tell you straight up what I think on where I think they are.” That kind of sincere and straightforward approach, coupled with Scruggs’ unique experiences as a player and a coach, have positioned him for what he believes is a chance to help Wisconsin’s defensive line achieve success. “I didn’t want to look back on my life and wonder what would have happened if I ever played football,” Scruggs said.
