Alex Smith a shoo-in for comeback player; which 49ers are worthy of NFL honors?
New York TimesHere’s a vote nearly every American can agree on: Alex Smith for the NFL’s comeback player of the year award. He’s made the Pro Bowl in each of the last four seasons and is having — statistically, at least — the most prolific season of his career. • T Trent Williams: He’s made the Pro Bowl seven times and could make his eighth a season after his cancer scare. He’s given up one sack since and is Pro Football Focus’ second-highest rated tackle this season: David Bakhtiari, Green Bay: 90.0 Williams: 89.7 Garett Bolles, Denver: 89.2 Andrew Whitworth, L.A. Rams: 88.7 Duane Brown, Seahawks: 88.1 Others: • CB Jason Verrett: Over his first few starts this season, there wasn’t a cornerback in the league better than Verrett and he’s been particularly sticky around the goal line. • S Jimmie Ward: He’s one of the league’s best tacklers at his position and Ward was named a Pro Bowl alternate last season.
