West hits back at Russia with sanctions for aggression against Ukraine

SANCTIONS AMID THE CURRENT RUSSIA-UKRAINE CRISIS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA In a move that could have been viewed as a warning to Russia, US President Joe Biden on Monday had imposed trade and investment restrictions on the two rebel Donbass regions in eastern Ukraine — Donetsk and Luhansk — that were given recognition as independent entities by Russia. THE UNITED KINGDOM In a move similar to the US’s, the United Kingdom imposed tough sanctions against five Russian banks and three businessmen, which Prime Minister Boris Johnson described as the "first tranche” of measures in response to Russian troops moving into two breakaway regions of Ukraine. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, “We will make it as difficult as possible for the Kremlin to pursue its aggressive policies.” JAPAN Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced sanctions targeting Russia and the two separatist Ukrainian regions, seeking to pressure Russia to return to diplomatic solutions. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that targeted financial sanctions and travel bans will be among the first batch of measures in response to Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine.
