10 Years After the UN Report: The International Community’s Role in Improving Human Rights in North Korea
The DiplomatThe Commission of Inquiry Report on North Korea shocked the world with revelations of horrific abuses. However, despite the engagement of the U.N. and the release of the COI report, the international community still faces significant challenges in improving human rights conditions in North Korea. We hope that the international community will continue to publicly address the North Korean human rights issue for the sake of the freedom and rights of North Korean people. The upcoming Universal Periodic Review in November will provide a great opportunity for the international community to scrutinize North Korea’s human rights situation more closely and seek accountability for those responsible. It is our sincere hope that the strengthened cooperation among the United States, South Korea, and Japan will translate into real pressure on the North Korean regime by addressing the human rights issue in the security and military context, especially with South Korea and Japan’s participation in the UNSC as non-permanent members this year.
