On this day: Fortress Gabba falls, Rishabh Pant leads India to historic series win
India Today"Can't wait for you to get to the Gabba," was what then-Australia captain and wicketkeeper Tim Paine had told Ravichandran Ashwin while the latter was batting out a draw for India with Hanuma Vihari at the other end in the third Test of the 2020/21 series in Sydney. It helped India complete their second consecutive series win in Australia, having become the first Asian team to do so previously in 2018/19. It meant that when India started the Gabba Test with a bowling attack that comprised of Mohammed Siraj, T Natarajan, Shardul Thakur, an injured Navdeep Saini and Washington Sundar. Opener Shubman Gill's 91 off 146 balls ensured that the target was always within sight for India and Pant ensured that they continued chipping away instead of retreating into a shell. The match, and India's series win, has since been hailed as one the country's greatest results in the Test cricket.
