Premier League and EFL financial relationship – how and why is it going to change?

New York Times

Additional reporting: Simon Hughes It is nine months since Tracey Crouch MP finally revealed her plan for British football. The Premier League’s own calculations say it paid £1.23billion to the EFL and wider football pyramid between 2019 and 2022, or £401million per season. “The danger that we have at the moment — and it’s a very stark danger — is that the EFL clubs stand still while the Premier League clubs move forward,” Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, tells The Athletic. “Football clubs need to come together now more than ever to safeguard the finances of the game for the future.” The EFL has ultimately been left behind by the Premier League. “We got to this point because the Championship had become an arena for gambling — for owners to subsidise the opportunity,” Bridge says, “If you spent x million pounds extra per season, and spent that for three years, it gives you the best opportunity to get to the Premier League and getting a multiple-fold increase in your revenue and the chance to create a sustainable club that’s more valuable than it was before in the Championship.
