Monstera deliciosa: Everything you need to know about the Swiss cheese plant

ABC

Did you know you can eat the fruit on your fruit salad plant? Rudi Louis Taylor-Bragge, a horticulturalist and plant shop owner, says the deliciosa's fruit "kind of looks like a straight banana". Melbourne greenhouse owner Han Nguyen says the Monstera deliciosa is also known as the Swiss cheese plant due to the holes in its leaves, which she says have a functional purpose. When choosing a Swiss cheese plant, she says to look for a bright green one that's not limp or yellow, and to inspect the leaves closely for "little cheeky buggos". "I always have Monstera as the big plant, and then next to it a medium sized plant, something that drapes, like a devil's ivy that cascades dow," Ben says.
