Talks fail, ASHAs to go on hunger strike from March 20
The HinduAccredited Social Health Activists, who have been agitating in front of the Secretariat to secure a better remuneration package, have decided to go ahead with their indefinite hunger strike from Thursday as two rounds of discussions with the National Health Mission authorities as well as the Health Minister failed to resolve the stalemate. With ASHAs declaring their intent to go on indefinite hunger strike from Thursday, State Mission Director of the National Health Mission Vinay Goyal called KAHWA leaders for a discussion on Wednesday afternoon. S. Mini, who represented KAHWA, told mediapersons that while Ms. George expressed her concern for ASHAs, she refused to give them any assurance regarding the hiking of honorarium or that of allowing retirement benefits. They would go ahead with their indefinite hunger strike as planned, from 11 a.m on Thursday, with three women going on indefinite fast in the initial phase.
