ASX rallies as inflation falls sharply to 5.6 per cent, easing pressure on RBA to lift interest rates — as it happened

The cost of living is falling but core inflation - which strips out volatile items like petrol - remains stubbornly high. The ABS says consumer inflation rose 5.6 per cent over the year to May, down from the 6.8 per cent increase over the year to April. ABS head of price statistics Michelle Marquardt: "This month’s annual increase of 5.6 per cent is the smallest increase since April last year. " Housing prices rose 8.4 per cent over the year, food and non alcoholic beverages rose 7.9 per cent, and furniture, household equipment and services rose 6 per cent, while petrol prices dropped 8 per cent. "The annual increase for the monthly CPI indicator was 6.4 per cent in May, slightly lower than the rise of 6.5 per cent recorded in April and down from a peak of 7.3 per cent in December 2022."
