Qualcomm to sell its first China-specific chips this year

Qualcomm Inc plans to sell its first smartphone chips tailored to China this year, as the US maker of chips for high-end phones adapts to a market where growth is increasingly driven by low-priced handsets. But revenue in the company's last reporting quarter grew at its slowest rate since 2010, as sales of expensive phones slowed in developed markets while low-priced models with comparable features drove growth in emerging markets. The executive also said Chinese phone makers surprised Qualcomm with "aggressive" pricing of handsets equipped with the latest fourth-generation communications technology, a segment where Qualcomm's chips are particularly ubiquitous. Low prices yield narrow profit margins, which for Qualcomm are likely to be pressured by competition from the likes of MediaTek Inc, whose cut-rate chipsets are popular with China's low-priced phone makers.
