A 10-step plan for the 49ers to reach Super Bowl contention in 2021
New York TimesThe 49ers fielded a powerful roster in 2019 and came within minutes of winning the Super Bowl. In fact, our calculations have indicated that the difference between a $180 million and $185 million salary cap might be the determining factor in the 49ers’ ability to re-sign valuable players like fullback Kyle Juszczyk. By extending Tomlinson’s contract through 2024 at a value of about $6 million per year, the 49ers could open up more than $4 million of 2021 salary-cap room. With no more guaranteed money on Richburg’s contract, the 49ers can cut him and save nearly $4.5 million in 2021 cap space. A creative solution, such as a contract restructure that converts Ford’s injury-guaranteed base salary into a signing bonus and spreads cap damage away from 2021, could reduce the cap hit to about $10 million and save the 49ers more than $9 million of very necessary space this year.
