High Court sets aside order for CBI probe into 'tampering' with panchayat poll nomination papers
India TodayA division bench of the Calcutta High Court on Monday rejected the order for a Central Bureau of Investigation investigation against the accused Block Development Officer. The division bench, led by Justice Arijit Banerjee and Justice Apurba Sinha Roy, set aside the single bench's order for a CBI probe and instead directed the West Bengal Police to initiate an investigation under the supervision of a retired high court judge. The case was filed before the single bench of the Calcutta High Court by two women candidates of the Communist Party of India regarding the alleged tampering of nomination papers for the upcoming panchayat election. Justice Amrita Sinha of the Cacutta High Court, who presided over the single bench, had ordered a CBI probe into the incident last week. With the rejection of the CBI probe order, the investigation will now be carried out by the state police under the supervision of the one-member commission appointed by the Calcutta High Court.
