Racism is not behind us says social justice commissioner

ABC

Growing up in the remote town of Fitzroy Crossing, Bunuba woman June Oscar grew up hearing racial slurs thrown around the playground. The New South Wales Police Force says their cultural awareness training includes "discussion on forms of racist behaviour and language". "I haven't seen a lot of racist behaviour, but racist language was normalised in the NT Police Force," Mr Rolfe told the court. "In my view, systemic racism exists in every police force, or majority of police forces, around Australia," says Ms Oscar. Last May, appearing at the state's Indigenous truth-telling inquiry, Victoria Police's Chief Commissioner Shane Patton acknowledged systemic racism in the force had gone "undetected, unchecked and unpunished".
