No long-term environmental harm in Ennore due to CPCL oil spill, says Union govt.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Friday said that Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited had taken significant steps to address the environmental damage caused by the oil spill in Ennore, in December 2023. He also sought clarification on CPCL’s transparency in the remediation process and whether it had complied with the directives issued by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and the National Green Tribunal. CPCL, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, and the TNPCB, has undertaken various restoration activities, Mr. Gopi said. Updated disaster management framework CPCL has a comprehensive Emergency Response and Disaster Management Plan, which was revised in 2024, aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
