Delayed and changed but Fulham’s ‘game-changing’ Riverside Stand will be open next season
New York TimesIt has taken longer than initially hoped, but Fulham supporters will finally return to the Riverside Stand next season when the new lower tier is opened for the first time. The club confirmed the news last week while reiterating their commitment to rehouse the evacuated Riverside season ticket holders who have been scattered around Craven Cottage since work began in the summer of 2019. The planning consultant, Lichfields, outlined to the council at the time that the investment in the stand, “combined with the financial impact of fans not being able to attend football games for large parts of the last two seasons, plus the added impact of relegation from the Premier League” meant “revenue generated sooner from the interim use of the new stand would be welcomed by the club”. The Riverside Stand will mark a big change for Fulham beyond the architectural contrasts of Archibald Leitch’s Grade II-listed Johnny Haynes Stand on Stevenage Road and the modern Riverside, complete with rooftop pool, views across London and a valuable public walkway between the Putney and Hammersmith Ends.
