Why the win in Delhi is important for Modi’s BJP

The BJP is all set to break AAP’s dominance in Delhi and is on course to end its 27-year wait to return to the national capital. For the Narendra Modi-led party, this poll battle was crucial for a number of reasons: it was a matter of prestige, the ability to retain the Hindi heartland vote and a morale booster ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections BJP workers celebrate as trends show the party's victory in Delhi Assembly polls, during counting of votes in New Delhi. File image/PTI As Prabhu Chawla writes in the New Indian Express, the AAP’s consecutive wins in Delhi and the rise of Arvind Kejriwal has not been a good look for the BJP and Narendra Modi. Kejriwal has also extended his reach beyond just Delhi; his party won the 2022 Assembly elections in Punjab and also secured five seats in Gujarat, considered to be BJP’s stronghold. He said, “Should the BJP win, it could be a huge morale booster for the party ahead of other state polls, including one due to be held in Bihar towards the end of the year.” Political watchers also note that the Delhi election is important to the BJP owing to its own performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where it lost an outright majority.
