Farmers oppose land survey for proposed SIPCOT expansion plan in Cheyyar
The HinduResidents, mostly farmers, have opposed the land survey by a joint team of district officials in Veerambakkam village near Cheyyar town in Tiruvannamalai to enumerate available assets like tree cover, farm wells and buildings as part of land acquisition process for the proposed SIPCOT phase-3 expansion project. As per the plan, 3,174 acres of land will be acquired from nine farming villages — Melma, Narmapallam, Kurumbur, Thethurai, Nedungal, Athi, Vada Alapirandan, Veerapakkam and Lianeerkundram — for the phase-3 project, which began over a decade ago, in Anakavoor panchayat union near Cheyyar town. Revenue officials said that as per government order, the State government has fixed Rs 18 lakh per acre of land that will be acquired in the affected villages for the project. The land survey was aimed to enumerate assets like total trees, farm wells and buildings located in these villages.
