Juukan Gorge traditional owners speak out about unequal relationship with mining giants during inquiry
ABCThe traditional owners of the 46,000-year-old Juukan Gorge that was destroyed by mining giant Rio Tinto in May have lodged their submission to the Federal Parliamentary inquiry, labelling the destruction of the caves a "shocking act of corporate vandalism to our very sacred site". Key points: The PKKP people said Rio Tinto was driven to maximise profits They said their relationship with the mining giant was "not equal" The parliamentary inquiry is due to report by December 9, 2020 In its submission, the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people raised questions about why Rio Tinto continued to load explosives around the Juukan 1 and Juukan 2 rock shelters after they had voiced concerns. PKKP seek to build 'positive legacy' The PKKP people said until immediately before the destruction they had an "active working" relationship with Rio Tinto and while that relationship was "not equal" and the mining giants ignored their concerns, they were now committed to moving forward. "Despite our pain, we are committed to work with stakeholders, including Rio Tinto and our other mining partners, to build a positive legacy of best practice engagement from the rubble of the Juukan Gorge disaster," the submission read.
