Meet the Black matriarchs changing the narrative of First Nations births. "I've definitely had women tell me that they waited because they didn't want to go to Cairns," says Tayla Smith, Yarrabah's first Indigenous midwife. "I've seen women in Queensland Health, not just Cairns, have a report put in for not attending antenatal care when it's not a reportable mandate," says Tayla. Obstetricians say they are prioritising women's safety, but many First Nations women report "institutional racism" in the mainstream maternal health system. Mel Briggs says it's important her patients have the support of Indigenous medical staff because many women are "scared of the system".
