INLD president and former Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala dies in Gurgaon

CHANDIGARH: Om Prakash Chautala, the 89-year-old former five-time Chief Minister of Haryana and president of the Indian National Lok Dal, passed away today in Gurugram. Chautala served as Haryana’s Chief Minister for five terms: from 2 December 1989 to 22 May 1990, from 1 July 1990 to 17 July 1990, from 22 March 1991 to 6 April 1991, and from 24 July 1999 to 5 March 2005. Chautala’s career took a significant hit when he was convicted in 2013 in a teacher recruitment scam involving the illegal appointment of 3,206 junior basic teachers in 2000 during the INLD’s rule. A special CBI court sentenced Chautala, his son Ajay, and 53 others, including an IAS officer, to varying jail terms.
