Keir Starmer channels Tony Blair as he sets out Labour’s five ‘missions’ for Britain
The TelegraphSir Keir Starmer echoed Sir Tony Blair as he pledged to be “tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime” if he wins the next election. Sir Keir also suggested he aspired to the former Labour leader’s longevity in the top job as he outlined his party’s five core “missions” for the country – some of which he admitted were “not going to be fixed within five years”. Labour is hoping its objectives – which it has sought to contrast with the “sticking plaster politics” of Rishi Sunak’s five promises – will form the building blocks of a successful election campaign. Pledging to make Britain’s streets safe by reforming the police and the criminal justice system, he said: “Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime – now you’ve heard that before, but it’s right.” The Labour leader said each of his missions would come with a “measurable goal, the building blocks of a clear strategy and the first steps of a credible long-term plan”. Sir Keir also said a Labour government would “fix the Brexit deal” and “reset” the UK’s relationship with the EU, adding that slow economic growth cannot be blamed solely on Britain’s vote to leave.
