Suns, Chris Paul exploring options, including trade or waive: Sources
New York TimesBy Shams Charania, Doug Haller and John Hollinger The Phoenix Suns have notified Chris Paul that they intend to find a resolution this offseason that fits the veteran star and the Suns organization, which could include parting ways, league sources tell The Athletic. The Suns and Paul are exploring multiple options, league sources tell The Athletic, including a trade, waiving and stretching his contract over multiple years, or waiving and potentially re-resigning him in free agency. The one thing that is crystal clear is that waiving Paul would make absolutely no sense; the Suns would end up paying him $15.8 million to play for the Lakers and wouldn’t generate enough cap room to sign anyone better. Waiving Paul and using the stretch provision on him would still leave the Suns above the salary cap, and with just five players under contract for next season. Finally, if the Suns wanted to clear room below the luxury tax aprons and were unable to put together trades involving Paul or Deandre Ayton, a better alternative would be to waive Landry Shamet and use the stretch provision to spread his $10.2 million salary over seven years.
