Opinion: Women's Reservation Bill - Wider effects of delimitation due after 2026

The passing of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Bill in the Lok Sabha is truly a historic moment. First, would it take into account the latest census data to assign the seats to the states and union territories, and second, would the Constitution be amended to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to what some say, as much as 888. If one were to go by the 2021 population data and assume that the delimitation exercise done after 2026 would redistribute the seats across states and union territories based on data emerging from the census, major shifts would occur. If the Lok Sabha strength remains at 543, the states of North and West India would gain as many as 25 seats more. If Lok Sabha seats are increased to 888, then the number of seats that every state and union territory is assigned may increase.
