US and India agree fighter jet deal to counter China in ‘Cold War II’
The TelegraphJoe Biden and Narendra Modi agreed on a defence deal that will see US drones and engines for fighter jets sent to India in a “historic” pact to counter China. The US president rolled out the White House red carpet for the Indian prime minister as part of his effort to boost relations against a backdrop of Beijing’s military expansion. “The challenges and opportunities facing the world in this century require that India and the United States work and lead together.” The deal came at a critical juncture, as Washington has been frustrated by New Delhi’s continuing close links with Russia during the war in Ukraine. Writing in The New York Times, Prof Maya Jasanoff, a history expert at Harvard University, said: “The message couldn’t be plainer: in Cold War II with China, the United States wants India on its side.”
