Twitter | Old bird, new king
The HinduWhen Elon Musk walked into the Twitter headquarters on Wednesday carrying a sink, the message he hoped to send was a triumphant “let that sink in” — a swipe at his detractors in the company and outside, in his own brand of Internet-friendly humour. From the early days itself, Mr. Dorsey seems to have had a vision of Twitter as less a social media app and more a communication layer deployable anywhere. Twitter permanently suspended Mr. Trump on January 8, 2020, a decision that was reportedly taken by chief legal counsel Vijaya Gadde, whom Mr. Musk has now fired. New era While his firing of the top order was expected, Mr. Musk begins his ownership amid rumours of a massive firing spree that would affect Twitter’s 7,500-odd employees across various countries. As the owner, however, Mr. Musk has moved to allay advertiser fears, saying: “Twitter cannot become a free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences.” Another direction in which Mr. Musk may take Twitter is turning it into a super-app, that would incorporate social media, payments, and various other features.
