India working on developing cheap treatment for blood cancer in children
India TodayIndia is taking a major step towards making CAR-T cell therapy, a cutting-edge cancer treatment for certain types of blood cancers, affordable and accessible to its citizens. Under the central government’s National Biopharma Mission, supported by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, researchers at Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, have started the country's first clinical trial for this advanced therapy in pediatric population. INDIA'S FIRST CLINICAL TRIAL FOR AFFORDABLE CAR-T CELL THERAPY The trial focusses on treating children with a type of blood cancer called relapsed/refractory B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, which does not respond to standard treatments. "BIRAC's support through NBM has been instrumental in bringing indigenously developed CAR-T therapy to India for children, significantly reducing costs, advancing clinical research, and improving patient outcomes," said Dr Raj K Shirumalla, Mission Director of National Biopharma Mission, in an exclusive interview with India Today Digital.
