Biden says risk of ‘nuclear Armageddon’ highest in 60 years
Al JazeeraUS president compares threat now with the Cuban Missile Crisis, which brought world to brink of catastrophe in 1962. United States President Joe Biden has warned the risk of nuclear “Armageddon” is at its highest since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, as Moscow talks openly of the possibility of using tactical nuclear weapons in its invasion of Ukraine. Speaking to Democratic Party donors late on Thursday, Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin was “not joking when he talks about potential use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons, because his military is, you might say, significantly underperforming”. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said on Friday that there are no signs of an imminent nuclear threat, adding that Biden was addressing Russia’s “reckless and irresponsible” rhetoric. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier on Thursday that Putin understood that the “world will never forgive” a Russian nuclear attack.
