Shigeru Ishiba: Former defense minister to be Japan’s new prime minister after winning ruling party contest
CNNTokyo CNN — Former defense minister Shigeru Ishiba will become Japan’s new prime minister after winning his party’s leadership contest on Friday, following a crowded race that ended in a runoff vote. It was Ishiba’s fifth attempt to lead the party, a conservative political machine that has ruled Japan almost continuously since the party’s founding in 1955. Following the vote, Ishiba said the LDP could now be “reborn and regain the trust of the people.” “I will believe in the people, speak the truth with courage and sincerity, and I will do my utmost to make this country a safe and secure place where everyone can live with a smile on their faces once again.” Shigeru Ishiba speaks during a press conference on September 27 in Tokyo, Japan. Kim Kyung-Hoon/Getty Images The political veteran has promised a “full exit” from Japan’s high inflation rates, vowing to achieve “growth in real wages.” He also supports legislation that could allow married women to keep their maiden names, has said Japan should reduce its dependence on nuclear energy in favor of renewables, and has called for an Asian version of the NATO security bloc to counter threats from China and North Korea.
