Early Childhood Education: The squeeze on anganwadi workers

The Hindu

The National Education Policy 2020 has brought attention to Early Childhood Care and education pertaining to the learning of children at the pre-primary level like never before. From pursuing integration of anganwadis and primary schools to activities and play-based learning, greater focus on education at anganwadi centres and appropriate pedagogical training for anganwadi workers, the government has announced several steps. Next year we will prepare and launch a one-year course for anganwadi workers who have qualifications less than that.” Uttar Pradesh is another state that has launched a similar training program for AWWs. In May 2023, then Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani launched “Poshan Bhi, Padhai Bhi”, an Early Childhood Care and Education program under Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0. On the other, proposals to create a parallel pre-primary vertical in government schools, like the one in Karnataka in July, are met with opposition by anganwadi workers who fear being out of work.
