Secret East West Link report forecasts increased traffic congestion on key roads

A report prepared for a Victorian Government body has found the East West Link tunnel will lead to an increase in traffic on some of Melbourne's key roads. Fairfax media reports the secret modelling done for the Linking Melbourne Authority shows there will be a significant rise in congestion along parts of Hoddle Street and in the suburbs of Kew and Bulleen. The report forecasts traffic near the top of Hoddle Street will jump as much 35 per cent in the morning peak, when the multi-billion dollar cross city tunnel linking the Eastern Freeway and CityLink is completed. "If you build a brand new piece of road infrastructure such as the east west link, freeing up the traffic flow along the Eastern Freeway, then more traffic is going to make its way onto the Eastern Freeway instead of rat-running through residential streets."
