24-day workshop to transform water hyacinth into handicrafts begins

Svarnim Puducherry, a unit of Sri Aurobindo Society, in association with Mahindra Hotels and Resorts Private Limited and Department of Science, Technology and Environment, on Thursday launched a 24-day workshop, aimed at transforming the invasive water hyacinth into sustainable handicrafts. The initiative, a part of WaterFest’25, is designed to blend environmental conservation with community development by equipping local women with the skills needed to create marketable items. According to P. Victor of Alliance for Good Governance, a coalition of non-governmental organisations, though water hyacinth is a menace in waterbodies it could turn out to be a good livelihood option for women. Joy Ganguli of Svarnim Puducherry highlighted the ecological footprints of water hyacinth and how the aquatic weed could be converted into an eco-friendly choice with technology, ranging from handicrafts, biogas and energy, etc., K. Kalamegam, Environmental Engineer, Department of Science, Technology and Environment said the government was willing to support such eco-friendly products.
