Joe Thuney, David Andrews … what about Cam Newton? Ranking Patriots’ free agents

New York Times

In the coming days, Bill Belichick and his New England Patriots coaching staff must make decisions on in-house free agents and how they’ll invest more than $60 million in salary-cap space when NFL free agency opens on March 17. LG Joe Thuney: The Patriots’ most valuable offensive player last season, Thuney was worth every penny of the $14.8 million franchise tag. CB Jason McCourty: With the statuses of Gilmore and Jackson up in the air, it’d make sense to keep McCourty for another season, especially with a subpar cornerback market in free agency. Jakob Johnson: The fullback would be higher on the list if he weren’t an exclusive rights free agent, meaning the Patriots merely need to tender Johnson to keep him.
