Spotlight on role of languages in promoting unity in diversity

Speakers at the two-day national seminar, ‘Bharatiya Bhasha Sangamam’, organised by National Sanskrit University, highlighted the role of languages in promoting unity in diversity and in ensuring the confluence of cultures. Appa Rao hailed the importance accorded to the languages in the National Education Policy to help students pursue higher education in science and technology in regional languages. SV Vedic University vice-chancellor Rani Sadasiva Murthy, the main speaker of the day, explained that there are about 2,000 languages in India, of which only 590 languages are alive. ABRSM national joint organising secretary Guntha Lakshman called Sanskrit as the root of all major Indian languages, referring to the connection between the two.
